Yulin Ng

BIOGRAPHY

Yulin is a screen and stage actor, singer-songwriter, writer and creator based in Singapore. She received her actor training at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore (accredited by Goldsmiths, University of London), graduating with a BA (Hons) in Acting in 2016. In 2019, she had the great privilege of training under Diane Venora, a Juilliard-trained veteran stage and film actress who boasts a vast experience on Broadway and in Hollywood. Yulin is also skilled in a variety of performance skills including singing, dancing, martial arts, guitar, drums, piano and horseriding. Yulin also holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Queensland, Australia.

In film and TV, Yulin has starred in Hello, Goodbye (2016), by Cannes Film Festival nominee Boo Junfeng, Chai Yee Wei's Sister (2019), part of the inaugural 15 Shorts project, Rice Wine Chicken (2017), by award-winning director Ang Geck Geck, Forget Us Not (2018), a short film commissioned by the Lien Foundation, Okto's quirky science infotainment Make Me A Super (2016), the MeWatch comedy sketch 5 x5 (2022) opposite the comedian Hirzi Zulkiflie, HOOQ's pilot episode of How To Be A Good Girl (2017), opposite Tan Kheng Hua and Oon Shu An in , and plays the lead in the brand new international children's TV series, Kooki's Crafty Show (2019), which airs all over the world, including the UK, Australia, the US, Asia, the Middle-East, Latin America, Europe and Africa. She was also in Li Lin Wee's Baby Bumps (2016), LA Web Series Winner What Do Men Want? (2013), by the award-winning BananaMana Films, and Mediacorp's Missing (2017), Upside Down (2017), Tanglin (2017), Lion Mums (2016), Fiends and Foes (2015), and Recession Heroes (2013). She has just wrapped up "Child Machine", a feature film slated to be released in 2022, where she stars opposite Johann Urb and Priit Pius.

Yulin's theatre credits include Eva, an original solo work which was selected for SOLO FEST 2019, Daughters of Eve, a site-specific iteration of EVA in 2018 that was workshopped during the CREA Arts Residency, A Peter Rabbit Tale, The Musical (2017) by the Singapore Repertory Theatre, The Hummingbird (2016), written by award-winning writer Zizi Azah and directed by award-winning director Edith Podesta, Sarah’s Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis (2015) by Cake Theatrical’s Natalie Hennedige, Revolutionary Model Play 2.0 (2015) by Wang Chong of Beijing’s Théâtre du Rêve’s, and Aole T. Miller's staging of Scorched (2014). She has also been invited back yearly to play guest starring roles in the cross-cultural dance theatre productions of Kirana Seni, including Bunga Tanjong (2016), Kenangan (2017) and in 2019, Wisma Geylang Serai, where she had the honour of performing for the Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong. She also does staged readings for Checkpoint Theatre, including Oon Shu An's #UnicornMoment, Huzir Sulaiman's Occupation, and most recently Recalling Mother opposite Munah Bagharib. Yulin is also a movement artist. She worked with Alexandra Pirici in the staging of Recollection (2018) at the NTU Centre of Contemporary Arts, and with Sarah Swenson, when The National Gallery of Singapore brought over Simon Forti's "Dance Constructions" (2019) from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Yulin is also a creator in her own right. She adapted and directed a reimaginative staging of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, which she titled WomanHattan (2016), and wrote and directed a short film, Vignettes in 2011. She has also been developing and staging iterations of an original one-woman theatre piece called Eva (2018, 2019) over the last two years, which she wrote, choreographed, composed and performed in. She desires to make art that is relevant, universal, honest, visceral, playful, and that inspires wonderment.

Yulin also recently released her first single, "Lest We Forget", which she wrote and composed, on the 22/02/2022. She collaborated with Ming Wei Neo for the arrangement of the piece, and sang it with Sarah Abrew Chan.

In addition to being an artist, Yulin is also an educator and workshop facilitator. She has assisted and facilitated drama and movement workshops for incarcerated women, care-takers, patients with chronic illnesses in hospitals and individual clients in therapy. Yulin has also taught drama at various international schools in Singapore, such as Dover Court International & Stamford American School, under the auspices of Faust International. She was also Associate Lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic from 2018-2020 where she taught acting, and from 2020-2021, was the Teaching Assistant of Dr. Peter Zazzali - the Programme Leader of the BA (Hons) Acting Program at LASALLE College of the Arts,  and a theatre director, actor and scholar whose work is recognised internationally. She continues to provides private coaching in acting and accent work, as well as customised movement and voice workshops for various organisations that tailor to their needs and goals.

Yulin believes that actors have the unique gift and responsibility of empathising through embodiment, and in so doing, reminding us of our common humanity.
